Experimental author’s course designed to cultivate the skills necessary for successful communication for journalists and media researchers at the international level – the ability to present the results of their research in written and oral form in the English language. Weekly classes will feature chosen topics and related written assignments (posted on the course social media page) based on reference texts, resulting in discussions of the subject matter. In addition, the course will be directed toward the preparation of an English language broadcast of “Episodes”, representing a class team project. A final test will reflect a summation of the course’s content.

Course Goal

The course aims at familiarising NaUKMA School of Journalism MA students with topics and questions related to the use of English in media, with a prime focus on North America. Historical developments in society and language in their impact on journalistic writing will be raised and discussed.  The practical tasks of the course are closely connected to the courses “Theory of Media Culture,” “The Basics of Hermeneutics,” and “Television News Production.” The course program is designed to assist students in mastering English-language literature across various disciplines.

Students will be able to
– utilize the English language for both written and oral expression of ideas
and arguments;
– adapt their language to the requirements of the audience and the context
of the media environment;
– interact with English-language sources of information, utilizing them to
deepen understanding of media topics;
– utilize the English language for argumentation, discussion, and critical
analysis of media phenomena and issues.
